Beginner Java Programming

DESCRIPTION:
The course is taught by "Example" so not a lot of theory, but practical examples that we walk through and talk about. It is meant to get you "Jump Started" into the Language - Later, with these samples under your belt, you can explore theory and tweak the samples at your leisure.

Covers Topics:

  • getting started
    download jdk + ide (Eclipse a free IDE) + configure env
  • Classes defined and used
  • Basic syntax
  • Standard libraries (java.lang.* & java.util.*)
  • Errors and Exceptions
  • Basic File I/O
  • Basic Database Connectivity with JDBC.
  • EXTRA: Basic Web server integration.
  • Extra Topics discussed if time: JSP, EJB, Struts, Hibernate...etc. Open Q/A.

We'll cover the fundamentals and starter code in each of the above topics. OPTIONALLY, participants are encouraged to bring their laptop with wireless card to run through examples and actually deploy their web application. With an optional followup class (Friday Oct 13th from 3-5pm) - depends on desire and progress made on Monday. Please spread the word and have people ***signup*** to sign up. Space is limited.

About the Instructor: Joel A. Thompson is a consultant, specializing in Java/J2EE and Oracle Software Development. Over the last 17 years, he has designed and developed dozens of Enterprise level systems. Joel has instructed technical Java/Web/Database courses through U.C. Davis Extension and has delivered numerous presentations at conferences and seminars, like IOUG, NoCoug, SacJUG, UtahOUG and many independent companies. Prior to consulting Joel worked for 6 years as an Oracle Employee in Management, Software Development, and System Administration. He holds a BA in Applied Math from U.C. Berkeley, and a Masters in Computer Engineering from Santa Clara University.
